Ý Experimental artists embody the soul of local performance. To uncover them, we enlisted the help of four local independent curators—Keith Hennessy, Sean San JosÈ, Francis Wong and Isabel Yrigoyen—whose long-standing presence in the community keeps them in touch with what’s new. Join us as we celebrate artists who challenge the status quo in ways we couldn’t imagine, and in places we didn’t know existed.

Featuring (same program each night, not necessarily in order of appearance):

Ý Glamamore, Fauxnique and Kiddie
San Francisco drag superstars Glamamore, Fauxnique and Kiddie present Triad (working title), a look at powerful, glamorous creatures that run in packs of three. With their taste for dark beauty, flights of fancy, and highly stylized theatrics, they move the drag number into operatic territory. Though they employ the long-standing tradition of lip-synch, they treat it more as an extension of a dance than as a means of impersonation. The fabulous gowns they wear (by Mr. David) are transformers, threatening to disintegrate, explode, envelop…. Expect female energy yes, but in the form of witches, valkyries, spiders, fates and planets.

Ý Jade-blue Eclipse
Jade-blue Eclipse specializes in handbalancing and contortion. To learn hand-balancing and contortion, as with any technical physical skill, Jade-blue spent years of days-and-nights training and dieting. One day recently, her inspiration faltered, and she spent much of the last year pondering the age old question – is there such a thing as free will? As in, where is the strength of will and perseverance to train? Often, in our society, the idea of free will exists only to justify punishment from those who judge. Or, was training, and the ability to survive it, a DIVINE GIFT named Inspiration and Love? Jade-blue expresses her feelings of being inspired and in love with this new work, CURSED.Ý

Ý Jewlia Eisenberg’s Charming Hostess
Charming Hostess is three women in a whirl of eerie harmony, hot rhythm and radical braininess. Their music is intensely physical, rooted in the body – voices and vocal percussion, handclaps and heartbeats, sex-breath and silence. They live where Jewish and African diasporas collide, incorporating doo-wop, Pygmy counterpoint, Balkan harmony and Andalusian melody.Ý

Ý Toychestra
Toychestra is an all-women musical ensemble that plays toys. Some are actual instruments like toddler-sized pianos and xylophones and drums. Others just make great sounds, like the pink zoo train or Boo Megaphone or the acoustic, multi-sonic Activity Center. Still others are used for percussion, like the washboard, Don’t Wake Daddy, and woodblock. Each instrument is individually amplified with contact microphones and the collection is mixed live for a bigger electronic sound. This creates a sophisticated aural experience that is a far cry from a bunch of kiddies banging around. Toychestra performs original compositions ranging from stark to upbeat, from percussive to melodic, to ambient, avant-garde and kitsch. In the past the band was known to do a few covers ranging from Dvorak to Kraftwerk to Black Flag. Ý
